Become a Mikva Teacher

Mikva Challenge always welcomes new teachers who are excited about using our Action Civics model and interested in using our curricula, attending our workshops, or participating in our programs. We invite teachers and youth workers to choose their level of involvement according to their interests and availability - click the pdf below to download a full brochure of offerings (icon Mikva Challenge Resource and Program Offerings (757 KB) ) or see below for brief descriptions of the some of the most commonly chosen options.

  • Use our curricula     The Center for Action Civics (CFAC) currently has two complete curricula available for purchase (Issues to Action and Democracy in Action). Read more about each and find out how to download sample lessons and/or order full copies by clicking here. We also offer a variety of supplementary lessons/activities/readings/etc. (including an entire unit on Elections in Action) on the Resources tab of our website. Teachers/youth workers are welcome and invited to use any of these curricula whether or not they participate in any Mikva grant-paying programs.

  • Attend our workshops     In addition to our curricula, CFAC also offers several professional development workshops each year aimed at helping teachers improve their ability to implement various aspects of the Action Civics model in their own classrooms. Summer workshops cost a fee (though some scholarships are available) and school year workshops are free to attend; participants at each earn CPDUs for their attendance. Like our curricula, teachers and youth workers are invited to attend these workshops whether or not they participate in any Mikva grant-paying programs. Check our Upcoming Mikva Events page to find information on coming workshops as they are scheduled.

  • Apply for one of our programs     Each year, Mikva invites interested teachers to apply for one or more of our Classroom Activism and/or Elections in Actions programs. Teachers in each program receive our curriculum, attend our workshops, are eligible to receive classroom support from Mikva staff, and are invited to bring students to participate in citywide events such as Project Soapbox, the Civics Fair, and/or various campaign-related events and trips. Those who complete each program are also eligible to receive a small grant for their work.
